Ride Notes for Tuesday 26th November
"Tourist ride" type ride with several brief photo stops. Subject to time and favourable weather we'll visit the Quarantine overflow cemetery (instead of the gun placements) near our Bella Vista Cafe stop. Cancelled if raining/severe weather. Check website or texts if opted in.
Ride Description
Ride with significant hills, mostly on back roads, through to the Spit, Balgowlah, Arabanoo/Dobroyd Lookout, Manly harbour side to North Head. Descend to the Collins Flat Beach and view from the walking track. Retrace to North Head entrance and detour to the Sewage Treatment Plant access road before briefly exploring the barracks and some historical gun placement areas. Continue on to take the main North Head loop and descend to Quarantine Station. Briefly view significant historical areas (hospital, isolation area, rock engravings/inscriptions and class precincts). Hopefully coffee near the Quarantine Wharf and magnificent views. Return via Manly surf side, Manly Vale, Burnt Bridge shared path, Balgowlah, Spit and back streets of Cremorne and Cammeray. Pace is faster on the flatter sections where the route allows but slower to accommodate "tour" areas. Short parts of the ride have heavier traffic. The Collins Flat Beach section is best done on a week day or earlier in the day on the weekend. There are some short steepish descents of 11 - 12%. The alternate route to the Spit (from the end of Wyong Rd) crossing Military Rd at the pedestrian lights should be used when roads are wet.
