Berowra Glenorie

About this event

Commencing at Hornsby Pool we ride along the Pacific Highway to the Berowra Waters turnoff and descend to the Berowra Waters Ferry. After crossing on the ferry, we have a 3.5km climb before using quiet roads through Berrilee and Arcadia. Taking Wylds Road and the busier Old Northern Rd we head on for a coffee stop at Glenorie Bakery. Note that some sections of Old Northern Rd have no or minimal shoulder.

Returning from Glenorie, we retrace our route after joining Arcadia Rd at Galston shopping area. Final return into Hornsby uses a diversion through Asquith.

Features of the ride are bushland and Berowra Waters scenery.

As this ride includes long climbs of 3.5 to 4.5km with average gradients of 4-6%, with sections to 10%, riders must be capable on hills. It also involves highways, arterial roads and country roads so experience in riding near fast moving traffic is essential.

Much of the ride moves at greater than the advertised speed as hills slow the average. There is no food or public transport available between Berowra Heights and Glenorie so riders must be self-sufficient, with water, food and spare tubes, especially in summer when it can get very hot.

The ferry is closed for maintenance from noon to 2:30pm each second Tuesday of the month.

Features: Two scenic long climbs and descents with ferry crossing. Riding along the Berowra Galston ridge usually with low traffic and farmland views. At Glenorie, visit one of Sydney’s famous bakeries.

Suitability: Riders wanting to improve or maintain climbing skills and fitness. Some sections will involve riding beside busy traffic.

Coffee option: Glenorie Bakery. Galston shops also possible.

This ride is better lead at off peak times. Perhaps even on a Sunday.
