26 AUGUST 2026              Your Bike North NewsLETTER

A note from Ken Quail, newly elected President

Ken Quail

I fell in love with cycling when I was 8 years old and have cycled now for nearly 60 years. I have been a cycling commuter in Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney. I have cycled in over a dozen countries, ridden remote tracks such as the Hunt 1000 and enjoy regular recreational rides in Sydney. This hasn’t included a lot of rides with Bike North but I expect that to change.

I have been in the role as Advocacy Coordinator since March this year and have been delighted to work with the fabulous advocates we have, and have had the pleasure of working with our dedicated committee. I had a 44 year career in agricultural science, including a stint as CEO of a 50 employee, not for profit company providing technical support to Australia’s wheat industry. I retired a little over 12 months ago and hope to dedicate more time to Bike North, among other interests.

In the year ahead I would like to see Bike North’s membership grow. A strong membership base is critical for Bike North to celebrate a 60th anniversary in another 30 years. A strong membership will also indicate that we are delivering the rides, social engagement and advocacy that members want. Please reach out to me if you have any ideas on how Bike North can be a better BUG.

I hope to see you on a ride soon, in the meantime ride safely.

Bike North, three decades on (Wendy Jannings)

2026 AGM Poem
With the gentle hum of two wheels in line,
An organisation began, quite benign.
12 bike riders met to form a BUG,
To serve northern Sydney as a club.

To promote safe cycling, a common bond,
Volunteers all planning for then, and beyond.
For the Club colour, they happened upon purple,
That colour to date, has come full circle.

Over the years, links have been weaved,
Bike North the Club, has much achieved.
Three decades on, groups are within -
Advocacy, Coaching, Exec, leaders akin.

With rides a-plenty every week,
Choices for the strong, choices for the meek.
Climbing out of gorges, or as flat as a tack,
A leader will lead, out and back.

And when, the Leader stops for a coffee or a tea,
Nowhere else the group would rather be,
Than with like-minded people in hi vis gear,
Recounting tales of blood, sweat and good cheer.

Sharing interests, stories and passions alike,
Centring all is the humble bike.
With a membership force continually thriving,
Congrats to Bike North - 3 decades surviving.

Bike North Jerseys

There is a slight delay in the Bike North clothing shop opening, it will open asap!
We are awaiting the updating of prices & graphics on the site. Then the shop will be open for a few weeks.
Order our latest design jersey (long and short sleeve available) Team it up with a gilet, socks, cap and arm warmers (thermal or UV) for the full BN look!
The price list will be published in next week's Chain Reaction

 OUR JERSEY

Features of the Bike North jersey include:

Short sleeve “Bronze Comp” jersey in ultra lightweight fabric combines lightness, casualness and breathability. Sleeve length is 4cm longer than a standard jersey sitting just above the elbow, a more relaxed design yet still offers body-hugging fit for comfort.
Long sleeve jersey is now the same fabric as the short sleeve jersey. It is slightly more body hugging than the Bronze Comp Cut of the short sleeve. If you didn’t try on your size at the AGM, then I would strongly recommend going to Cuore in Alexandria before purchasing. (I myself would purchase this Jersey in XL, but fit L in the short sleeve).
Moisture-wicking fabric supports body temperature regulation and comfort
Three back pockets and one small, zippered pocket.
Bike North colours and logo.
Available in a range of sizes from XXS to 4XL.
You can even adjust the sleeve or torso length (longer or shorter) at an additional cost of $15 for sleeves and $15 for torso (i.e. $30 for both).

ORDERS
Place your order through our ONLINE SHOP:  https://teamshop.cuore.ch/bike-north
Check your sizing using the ‘find your size’ wizard in your selected item by filling in your personal measurements. The more data you enter, the more accurate the recommendation. If borderline between sizes, order the larger size. AGAIN I recommend physically visiting the Cuore store at 26/110 Bourke Rd Alexandria (Mon-Fri mobile +61414691845 office 93102740 check opening times).
All Bike North members are entitled to a subsidy of $35 towards the cost of their FIRST jersey (only!). To claim the subsidy, use the code BNMEMBER at the checkout!

Notes from Bicycle NSW

Changing Gears

Bicycle NSW is currently drafting a strategic advocacy plan for the coming NSW state election and the next term of government.

The working title is Changing Gears: A decade of making walking and riding the best choice for everyone in NSW.

The number one objective is to illustrate the community's growing desire for walking and cycling infrastructure. BNSW will assemble evidence and data to prove this. The plan will include demand analysis, which can then be used by anyone advocating for stronger government investment into the future.  BNSW will aim to quantify the benefits for regional NSW as well as Greater Sydney.
