Bike North 30th Anniversary
August 2026 marks the 30th Anniversary of Bike North.  Since 1996, our Club has grown from a handful of passionate riders into a vibrant community that advocates, educates and explores together.  To celebrate three decades of pedalling progress, we have a series of special events planned throughout the year. Look out for invitations to our special 30th Anniversary Dinner, Anniversary themed AGM and our Heritage Ride series.  We will also mark this occasion with special features in our club Newsletter.
For now, mark your diaries for the 30th Anniversary Dinner on Saturday 8 August.  On-line bookings will open in two weeks.

Did You Know?

Why Was Purple Chosen As Our Club Colour?

Originally Bike North did not choose the colour purple for our jerseys. When the founders decided they needed to be wearing the same t-shirts to go on the Gong ride, someone's brother-in-law was a t-shirt printer and purple happened to be the colour t-shirt he had available for the Club.  And the rest is history!  Here is a picture of the Bike North team at the 1996 Gong ride.  Thank you to Doug Stewart for sharing this Heritage story and photo.

Defensive Cycling

We’ve all heard about defensive driving but what about “Defensive Cycling”?  Defensive Cycling can be defined as:
“Involves proactive riding to avoid hazards by maintaining high visibility, scanning far ahead, and anticipating driver actions.”

Key techniques include riding 1m from the curb, taking the lane when necessary for safety, establishing eye contact with drivers, and using hand signals. Always assume you are invisible, maintain a safe speed, and keep fingers on brake levers. Whilst defensive cycling often covers our interactions with cars, it also is important on shared paths as well.

This article is part of the Rider Safety series and will give you guidance on High Visibility, Car Doors, Pedestrians and Dogs, and much more, to enhance your safety whilst riding.
