Pirrama Purgatory and Back

About this event

Notes for Sunday January 25th

If too busy we will omit the Opera House forecourt omitting about 5km. "Tourist" type ride with several brief stops. Ride will be cancelled if raining or severe weather.

Ride Description

Scenic loop ride via bridges and bays around Sydney Harbour. It will visit: Gore Hill cycle path, Hunters Hill, Henley, Russell Lea, Haberfield, Pyrmont Bridge, Walsh Bay, Barangaroo, Rocks area, SHB and return to St Leonards.

This ride is an alternate to the classic “Bays and Bridges” ride avoiding the busy Bay Run and Blackwattle Bay area but adding other points of interest.

Features: Views around Hunters Hill, Henley, Inner West and Pyrmont, bays and harbour, city and fantastic bridges

Suitable for hill fit riders looking for an easier paced scenic ride. Riders must be comfortable in suburban traffic.

Why purgatory? Purgatory could be our hard-won relief for conquering the hills on our ride but has special meaning when we briefly visit a memorial to the early stone cutters/masons involved in the Pyrmont sandstone quarry. Other points of interest include transit of the Tarban creek bat colony and Pyrmont higher level harbour lookouts.

When Circular Quay is not too busy, we will tour around the front of the Opera House. We use cycle paths and quiet streets wherever possible but do have some busy streets and some hills. There is always something interesting happening on our harbour foreshores.

Coffee locations can be selected from: Haberfield, Leichhardt, Pyrmont, Pirrama Park or Walsh Bay. (The diversion to Ramsay St and Dalhousie St Haberfield is not necessary when having coffee at other locations and will reduce ride length by 2km).
