Inaugural event for this new route.
Standard Description
Ride from the Northern Sydney area to Gladesville Bridge, through Balmain, then across to the Inner west Greenway to return via the Cooks River.
This route is best ridden on a weekend or holiday period due to traffic considerations. Route can start at a number of alternate Rail or Metro locations on route (or nearby). E.g. Meadowbank Wharf and Eastwood station.
Starting at Epping, pass through North Rd and Quarry Rd to head over to Hunters Hill to reach Gladesville Bridge. After crossing, the route takes a scenic way through Drummoyne, and over Iron Cove Bridge. The route diverts left to do an arc through Balmain before joining back up to Victoria Rd to then turn into Rozelle Parklands. After traversing through the parklands we head down Lillyfield Rd to the start of the Greenway.
Coffee options are quite variable, such as a diversion to Bar Italia (Norton St Leichhardt) prior to joining the Greenway, or to the different options along the Greenway itself such as:
- Café Calibre, 66 Constitution Rd, Dulwich Hill
- Headlands Coffee, G03/18 Flour Mill Wy, Summer Hill
Tip, if the Greenway is to be busy with Pedestrians, it can be better to ride it earlier and have coffee later.
The route passes through the entire length of the Greenway to join the Cooks River shared path, where it continues to Strathfield. The route then heads to Sydney Olympic Park, Meadowbank, and then climbs back to Epping.
It is expected regrouping will be minimal, but it will depend on the pace to which it is run and the group.
Allow for 3.5 to 4.5 hours including ride briefing, regroups, and coffee at a Moderate 19 - 22 kmh pace.
Riders are to have geared road bikes or geared flat bar road bikes due to the hilly nature of ride sections. Riders need to be comfortable cycling on the road or road shoulder with traffic.
Route hazards include on road or path items such as bollards, sticks, potholes etc. Riders to be particularly careful on shared paths with pedestrians and dogs that may unexpectedly move in front of the rider.
The ride does pass near or through several railway stations, Metro, and Light Rail lines which would provide options for riders to leave the ride. Check how trackwork might impact these options for the day. Optionally riders could turn around at any point and retrace the route, but please let the ride leader know BEFORE you leave the ride
