New Route for Bike North
(Essentially a longer version of the Berowra Ferry route).
Challenging ride enabling enjoyment of some of Sydneys classic coastal bush in Ku-Ring-Gai National Park.
Note: Significant climbing is involved. Experienced climbers only accepted. Please discuss with the ride leader if unsure.
The ride is also a good base training ride for the various challenging external cycling events that are held such as the yearly Cycling Classics.
Start at Epping, pass through Browns Waterhole up to Turramurra, descend Bobbo and climb the northern side. Ride the Old Pacific Highway to the Berowra Waters Ferry to enjoy another descent. Climb to Berowra Heights for coffee. (Or have it earlier on the other side of Berowa Waters). Return on the old Pacific Highway and finish with another long descent and easier climb back through Ku-Ring-Gai National Park to Turramurra, then descend to Browns Waterhole, and climb back to Epping.
It is expected that regrouping will be minimal for this ride but it will depend on the pace to which it is run and the group.
Ride could start at a number of alternate rail or metro locations, and as would be the practice for the base ride, modifications may be required for day of the week and time-of-day traffic.
Allow for 4.5 to 5.5 hours including ride briefing, regroups, and coffee at a Moderate 19 - 22 kmh pace.
Riders are to have geared road bikes or geared flat bar road bikes due to the hilly nature of ride sections. Riders need to be comfortable cycling on the road or road shoulder with traffic.
Route hazards include on road or path items such as bollards, sticks, potholes etc. Riders to be particularly careful on shared paths with pedestrians and dogs that may unexpectedly move in front of the rider.
The ride does pass near or through several railway stations which would provide options for riders to leave the ride. Check how trackwork might impact these options for the day. Optionally riders could turn around at any point and retrace the route, but please let the ride leader know BEFORE you leave the ride
