20 nOVEMBER 2024              Your Bike North NewsLETTER

Thank the Romans!

For centuries, the Forum was the centre of day-to-day life in Rome: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs. The heart of ancient Rome, it has been called the most celebrated meeting place in the world, and in all history.1

Three thousand years later, while gladiatorial matches may be a thing of the past (well unless you have Russell Crowe on favourites), we still see the value in forums for conversations and sharing ideas.

And, as cyclists, there’s nothing more we like than to chit chat about all things ‘bike’, right?

To facilitate that chat, we are launching a new forum on our Bike North website!

First off the ranks is the OnBikeTech forum, moderated by Martin Bowesman.

Due to recent events, discussion of safety cameras has been a hot topic and is clearly of interest to many members. Martin has undertaken detailed research and testing of on-bike cameras and is sharing his research via the forum and opening up a discussion forum on this and other topics.

Bike North members can access forums via the Membership menu on our website. And for more on how to use a Bike North forum, please review our guide:  https://BikeNorth.clubexpress.com/docs.ashx?id=1334228

I look forward to chatting with you on our forum soon!

One Final Thought Around Safety Cameras!

Some may recall seeing an email at the end of August seeking assistance for any video footage following a "Hit & Run" in Marsden Park. It was disappointing that despite a number of traffic cameras, we learnt that these are used for live traffic monitoring, and do not record video.

Fortunately it was discovered that footage had been captured via a rider’s GoPro, and more importantly had captured the number plate of the offending driver, which has since been passed to the police, and is now part of an active police investigation.

Having seen the footage, it has made me appreciate the importance of the different technologies and associated settings, and I have started to document how settings can impact video quality.  Whilst it can be subjective, it could mean the difference between reading the number plate most of the time or only some of the time - this document will be made available to the broader Bike North community in the coming days.  Whilst it does not yet compare all available safety cameras, it will be updated as cameras are made available and compared.

I know safety cameras may be expensive, but the more riders who use one, helps protect everyone on that ride, and may ultimately lead to a safer riding experience for all.

Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge 2024

An adventurous group of 16 Bike North members and friends signed up for the annual Snowy Valleys Cycle Challenge 2024 (SVCC). Several distances were available including 20km,45km,72km,117km and 160km. SVCC has always been a friendly, well run and reasonably priced event. A nice spring ride in the Snowy foothills with great scenery. The weather forecast for 10 November was looking good with light wind, clear sky and temperature ranging from 12 – 28C.

This article focuses on the Bike North stalwarts took on the full 160Km. Other stories from those that attempted the 73Km and 117Km event ranged from, “a great ride with stunning scenery” through to “this was the most arduous ride I have ever attempted”. As the SVCC website states, “Life is a climb, but the view is great”.
