King Charles missed the Ramsgate Ride!
While the King was busy on the Lower North Shore (maybe he hadn't heard about our Trial Membership offer?),  Kerry Tipton took 11 riders out over the Sydney Harbour Bridge from Milsons Point on Sunday.  Destination Ramsgate!

The group was perturbed a little by the
hordes of walkers doing the Seven Bridges circuit but aside from Anzac Bridge, their paths did not overlap. It was a beautiful morning with the jacarandas scattering purple confetti as they made their way to the Brighton-le-Sands foreshore path.

Kerry noted, "We had a scrumptious coffee break at the La Promenade Patisserie at Ramsgate and were even given free pastries when they recognized the Bike North logo".  Sounds like it's worth wearing your Bike North jersey! (Need a new Bike North jersey, the Clothing shop is about to open).  The group then rode back to the city via Centennial Park. Brilliant. Well done Kerry.

Willoughby – Final Notice Cycling Strategy Exhibition

If you live, work, visit or ride your bike (or want to) through or to the Willoughby area please respond to the Cycling Strategy and Action Plan exhibition which closes this coming Sunday 27 October.

Click here to have your say.

Some points to consider:

  • Do you think Willoughby does have some good bike paths? – tell them what is good.
  • Do you think Willoughby needs some better infrastructure? What do think about dooring lanes?
What about the infrastructure – shared paths / bike paths? Are on-road routes still suitable or do we need more separation?
  • Are the connections to North Sydney and the bridge more important to you?
  • Connections to the Chatswood CBD or the villages?
  • What about the new metro stations in North Sydney? Do we need to better access there?
  • How about access to the north – to Ku-ring-gai? To Roseville Bridge? West To Lane Cove or the Lane Cove River Park?
  • Do you have any great ideas for bike routes in Willoughby?
  • What about bike parking and signage?

Pinos, Parramatta and Police

Bike North member, Will, is blind. Recently, Will rode 42kms on our popular Parramatta Park Parade route using a ‘Pino’ electric tandem bike of a special design.

Pino bikes connect people who want to ride, like Will, with people who can.
A training squad from the NSW bicycle-mounted Police caught up with Bike North on our ride and were very interested in the Pino bike. They were fascinated by the quality of the build and components. They chatted about some of their technical training, coming down sets of stairs(!) and thought that the Pino would be a good way to do that, because of its quality and stability under load.

We don’t plan to be riding Pinos down stairs any time soon. We will, however, be seeing more Pinos on our rides.  There’s one coming up soon, if you'd like to join in.

Bike North goes East
We might be based in the North but that doesn't stop our Ride Leaders taking us all over Sydney.

Last Sunday John Kyriakopoulos led 11 riders (including three first timers on this route) on the scenic but lumpy loop from Centennial Park to Watson's Bay. The route then circled south past the Eastern Suburbs ocean beaches for coffee at Little Bay.

The return to Centennial Park was via La Perouse and the Port Botany breakwater. While a gusty southerly headwind added to the climbing challenge this meant the wind was with them for a rapid return from La Perouse.

City Bike Tours

Touring a city by bike generally is a low speed activity that almost all Bike North members could do, as they are not designed for highly experienced cyclists. However, they do allow you to cover more ground than walking, often with a guide who reveals the inside picture on what the city is really like. Some years back, doing a tour of Moscow suburbs, it was possible to discuss the political situation in Russia, with opinions expressed in a way they never could be on a formal tour.

Selecting a good tour is not easy and there can be duds, as well as surprises. Simply use your search engine and look for a bike tour in the city you are interested in. Price isn’t always a good guide, as I recently found out in London, with a high price tour not being value for money. On the other end of the scale, tours in Tokyo, Rome and Cambridge being brilliant. Have a good look at photos of the bikes and descriptions of where you go. Then, give it a go!

The Tokyo ride was brilliant, as it took you away from city tourist spots to ancient areas where streets were only two meters wide. Rome was memorable, as it was a night tour, taking us through narrow alleys and into piazzas filled with light, cafes and music. The ancient areas of Rome look very different by night. Yes this one included antipasto and a glass of wine, which was an added benefit! Barcelona also provided fascinating history of the Catalonian independence movement. Each one, from Cambridge to Zagreb were enjoyable and provided a different way of getting to know a city.

So if you want to see as much of a city in a short time, try doing a city bike tour.
