Overview:
This scenic ride follows the Colo River through a picturesque valley, passing through Central Colo and Upper Colo. It includes both tarmac and well-maintained gravel fire trails, offering a mix of gentle and challenging terrain. Riders should be comfortable with loose surfaces, moderate climbs, and occasional fast descents.
Route Description:
The ride begins at the Colo Riverside Café and follows the river as it winds through the valley. Upon reaching Upper Colo, the route turns right to cross the Colo River. Here, the surface changes to a well-maintained fire trail with a steep initial climb. Low gears and grippy tyres are essential, and if the trail is wet, some sections may require walking. At the top of the climb, the route transitions back to tarmac, leading a short distance north to a mobile café - availability not guaranteed.
After a brief stop, the route heads back down the Putty Road for a short distance before turning left onto Wheelbarrow Ridge Road. This section features small holdings, a mix of gravel and tarmac, and some fast descents where caution is required due to loose surfaces and the occasional local car. The ride then continues to Lower Portland, where it crosses the Colo River again. From here, a mix of tarmac and gravel leads back to the starting point.
A bailout option is available at the halfway point by descending Putty Road back to the start.
Important Considerations:
• In hot weather this ride is not recommended. Carry ample water, as refilling options are unreliable.
• Bring snacks and a first aid kit.
• Be cautious of fast-moving cars and motorcyclists on the Putty Road.
• Ride with a safe stopping distance, especially on downhills.
• Do not rely on riders ahead to choose the correct line or speed.
• Hazard calls for obstacles such as rocks and sticks may be too frequent, so stay alert and scan the trail ahead.
• It is only suitable for ‘gravel’ bikes or mountain bikes (MTB). Do not attempt this ride on a road bike or with tyres less than 40mm width.
• YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THE ROUTE AND SYNC YOUR DEVICES PRIOR TO LEAVING SYDNEY AS THERE IS NO 5G RECEPTION IN COLO
