| Volunteer Award: Andrew Elliston - Rides
Andrew Elliston is ‘part of the furniture’ at Bike North. A member since 1999, Andrew took on the role of Ride Leader in 2015 to share his joy of riding with others. More recently still, Andrew has been on the Rides sub-committee, helping to manage Bike North’s library of routes and guiding and assessing new Ride Leaders.
It is for his achievements in the area of ‘Rides’, that Andrew has been recognized for Bike North’s Volunteer Award in 2024.
Read about Andrew's contributions and achievements in our full article here.
| Have You Activ8-ed Yet?
We are only days into Activ8 and things are starting to happen.
Have you Activ8’ed your bike yet, using either the article in last week’s Chain Reaction or Peter Green’s video guidance? A reliable, well maintained bike is not only safer, but also more fun to ride.
This week there is an article on Activ8’ing yourself in a safe manner. Check it out below!
Ride Leaders are adding rides to the Calendar earlier than normal, trusting the weather will be kind. They are also adding some additional weekend rides for some of us looking for an “easier” ride. Already we have 18 rides up on the Calendar and most have slots available so grab one now. More rides will be listed so keep an eye on the Bike North Calendar.
If there are rides you’d like to do, drop an email to info@bikenorth.org.au and we’ll see if we can organise it. Don’t forget to mention what days suit. Is anyone interested in a Clockwise Bobbin Head for those who haven’t done it before?
So lets take advantage of Spring and Activ8!
Brian Lynne, Secretary and Ride Leader
| Is your Body Ready to Activ8?
We talked last week about the need to check your bike over if it has been inactive over the Winter period - but what about you?
Winter can be a time of excess heavy foods, inactivity by the fire and a glass, or more, of your favourite red wine, and why not? You worked hard for this time of relaxation. What if the scales show you have put on a few extra kilos? Obviously, it’s time to buy some more honest scales.
September is the first month of Spring and it’s time to Activ8, but are you up to it?
Life is about living longer, but also having a better quality of life. Exercises, such as cycling, can help you achieve both. Especially for those who are “no longer 21”, like most Bike North members, cycling is a great, non weight bearing exercise, easy on the joints but provides benefits in weight control and cardiovascular fitness. Plus there are all the mental health benefits and friendships.
So, what do you need to do to in September, and beyond? Find out some tips from Brian Lynne to prepare yourself in this News article here.

What have your local candidates said about cycling?
Elections for local government will be held on 14 September. Local government has a big impact on cycling. Bike North’s advocates have written to all candidates across our nine LGAs, asking whether they would support active transport and cycling.
Find out what candidates are saying.
More than 50 lead candidates have responded to Bike North’s questions. What have candidates in your area said? Go to Bike North’s election page , search for your LGA or ward to find what they said. We are also publicising candidate responses with posts on the Bike North Facebook page here.
Sarkis Mouradian candidate of Willoughby says: "I support implementing safe routes to school, lowering speed limits and creating slow-traffic neighbourhood" while Alec Taylor of Ku-ring-gai said “encouraging the use of active transport should result in broad economic, environmental and social benefits for Ku-ring-gai”. What have your local candidates said?
You can let candidates know how important cycling is to your community
Have you seen a candidate at the shops or at the train station? Did you have a question ready to ask? The election page includes some questions you can ask candidates, in person, by phone or email. Take a look at some questions or download a template letter. Just visit our elections page here.

| | | | Your Urgent Help Needed - Sat 7 September
There will be plenty happening at the Chatswood StreetFair this Saturday and Bike North will be there too!
Thank you to those who have offered to help but we need more people to assist on the Bike North stall at the Chatswood StreetFair from 12pm onwards.
Please contact Mary Ann to volunteer for a 2 hour shift to assist. Early volunteers will assist with the setup of the stall, late with pull down and between times is the best fun chatting about cycling in the Willoughby area. You will have all the information you need to help out. It's always a busy and positive day talking about cycling. Let Mary Ann know your preferred time and times you are not available.

| | | Long Lasting Connection Discovered
As we buckled up a new passenger in the Cycling Without Age Trishaw this week we discovered we had a previous Bike North Ride Leader on board. Kevin Mason (pictured on left of trishaw) was a member, and indeed Ride Leader, who scoped out new rides to Prospect Reservoir and an architectural tour through Ashfield in his time with Bike North - " something like 20 years ago" said Kevin.
Kevin thoroughly enjoyed his ride and tour of Macquarie University from his new home at Baptist Care in Macquarie Park in the trishaw. He's looking forward to his next ride as are we!
