Special Notes
Welcome to this new ride on the Bike North calendar. This big loop of the North Shore and Inner West that takes in the Harbour does leave the rider with the feeling of achievement and. adventure, however the rider must be comfortable with the numerous short hills from Meadowbank to Eastwood and then through to the Epping Cycleway's and Gore Hill cycleway's ups and downs. The effort will be rewarded by a sightseeing break for coffee at the Coal Loader at Waverton.
Standard Notes
Ride to Balls Head Waverton to view the Coal Loader, and the harbour. The standard route commences at Meadowbank, and proceeds to Shrimpton Creek's shared path to reach the Epping Road and Gore Hill Shared path before turning toward the Coal Loader.
Coffee can be enjoyed at the Coal Loader itself overlooking Sydney Harbour. The stop could be extended enabling a wander around the facility, along with a copious quantity of photographs.
Return via the foreshore past Luna Park, the harbour Bridge, Anzac Bridge, Pyrmont Bridge, Rozelle Parklands and the Inner West.
Ride could start at a number of alternate rail or metro locations however as would be the practice for the base ride, modifications may be required for day of the week and time-of-day traffic.
Allow for roughly hours including ride briefing, regroups, and coffee at a Moderate 19 - 22 kmh pace.
The ride grading suggestion is:
a. Medium Hard at a Moderate 19 to 22 pace.
b. Medium at a Steady 17 to 19 pace.
Riders are to have geared road bikes or geared flat bar road bikes due to the hilly nature of ride sections. While there are shared paths, riders also need to be comfortable cycling on the road or road shoulder with traffic. Where there are shared paths, the ride leader may choose to use either the available shared path or to be on the road.
Route hazards include on road or path items such as bollards, sticks etc. Riders to be particularly careful on shared paths with pedestrians and dogs that may unexpectedly move in front of the rider.
The ride does pass near or through several railway stations which would provide options for riders to leave the ride. Check how trackwork might impact these options for the day. Optionally riders could turn around at any point and retrace the route, but please let the ride leader know BEFORE you leave the ride
