Notes for Tuesday 14th January
Tourist ride with several brief stops. Actual pace will probably be less than the moderate 19-22 km/hr pace due to the tortuous route. We will omit the very steep section of Linden Way. Earlier start to minimise the heat. Coffee at about 30km. Bring a snack if you need something earlier. Cancelled if raining/severe weather.
Ride Description
A loop ride but with several “out and backs” using suburban ridges or peninsulas aiming to catch significant harbour and suburban views. The route commences through Castlecrag with views of Sailors Bay then passing the Burley Griffin Amphitheatre and a memorial plaque to Leonard Teale. In Middle Cove we visit Harold Reid Reserve with views to Bantry Bay. In Castle Cove we can see the front view of Willis’s Castle, the access to Explosives Reserve and glimpses of the Roseville Bridge looking across to Garigal National Park. From here we move on to Northbridge passing to top of the baths and around to Clive Park, Fig Tree (Hallstroms) Point and climb up to the Knolls, a Northbridge secret from which we can take a quick walk to view surrounding suburbs including the Spit to the east. From here it’s a quick ride through Tunks Park with the Suspension Bridge towering above us to the west on to Cammeray to pick up our return route via the Gore Hill shared path back to Artarmon. As can be seen from the mapped route the sequence to particular suburbs can easily be changed. Toilet stop is usually Willoughby Park. There are plenty of coffee stop options. Riders must ensure brakes are fully effective in operation and be comfortable with some steep descents. Anyone capable of doing the Bike North ride “A to C + Z” should be suitable for this ride. The ride is best run at times of low traffic around the Castle Cove area crossing Eastern Valley Way and exiting on Boundary St. (early morning, weekends, public holidays or during school holidays)
