After stretching the legs along the M7 cycleway, this becomes an interesting exploration of Western Sydney Parklands, showcasing Bungarribee and Nurragingy. Upon entering Bungarribee Park over the Yellow Bridge, you will find 200-hectares of wide-open parklands space featuring picnic areas, a large playground and Warrigal Dog Run, one of the largest off-leash dog parks in Australia. Dismount the bike and jump on the Flying Fox here to race a friend down the swinging line, all for a bit of a laugh. Our casual coffee stop is at Harvey’s Social van where there is not a big selection of cakes, but friendly and fast service. There are outdoor tables or grab a milk crate under the gum trees. Then visit Bungarribee Homestead, site of an 1824 European settlement, and read the placards detailing the history of the farm with it being one of NSW’s earliest racehorse breeding grounds.
Loop your way over to Nurragingy Reserve, which features country-themed gardens, most notably the Chinese Garden with oriental-styled pagodas, a white stone bridge and cascading waterfalls. Spend some time exploring the many paths and picnic areas here. After this, you may stop at Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre (BARC) which is the council’s new facility replacing the old pound. Here you can wander around very clean and well-designed housing for cats, dogs and rabbits looking for forever homes. Who knows? You might even take a furry friend home with you. Western Sydney Parklands is also home to Greater Western Horseparks, a space for horse agistment. Riding along the cycleway, you will see grazing horses and ponies. Keeping a sharp eye out, you may also spot a grey kangaroo or two, and once a magical white unicorn (one-antlered albino deer) has also been seen
