Meadowbank to Bobbo

About this event

This ride is an introduction to hills. We will ride medium hills at a medium pace and give you the opportunity to learn the correct techniques. However this is NOT a beginners ride. Try a ride like Pie in the Sky first.

This ride is suitable for road bikes, hybrids or mountain bikes. The ride takes about 3.5 hours, which is 2.5 hours riding time and an hour in stops including coffee. We regroup at several points along the route.

We start from the busy waters near Meadowbank Wharf to visit the peaceful waters of Bobbin Head. In between we take a hilly but relatively low stress route along the regional north-south corridor. We ride north via West Ryde, Eastwood, Marsfield and Turramurra before entering Ku-ring-gai National Park for a brief visit. We return by retracing our route except for a slight variation around Turramurra to avoid traffic.

The route highlights include the Browns Waterhole link which is the only road bike link for travelling north/south between De Burghs Bridge and Pennant Hills Road. This is a concrete pathway but take care of overhanging vegetation and some debris on the path. This section can be flooded and impassable during or after heavy rain.

You will need to have the fitness and appropriate gears to climb Kissing Pt Rd and both long hills through Bobbin Head each about 4km in length. One is a nice steady pull out of Bobbin Head but the other has some quite steep sections.

What goes up must come down and there are three major descents as well. You need to have good descending technique and this ride is a good one for building up confidence both up and down hills.

Apart from the Browns Waterhole cycle path we ride on the roads, but most of them will generally have low traffic at the times we ride. However the roads are narrow and do not have cycle lanes marked so you must be confident when riding with cars passing close by.
