This is an old favourite and very useful Bike North ride involving varied traffic conditions and some stunning Hawkesbury scenery. Essentially, the ride involves cycling along the old Pacific Highway from our start point to about 2 kms past the old railway township of Cowan for a coffee stop at the Pie in the Sky cafe. Here patrons are treated to some great views overlooking the Hawkesbury River and Brooklyn. After the coffee stop we retrace our route back to Hornsby. This is an excellent ride for people wanting an introduction to undulating terrain and a change to something more challenging than flat riding. It is also a good drill for coping with traffic. At the outset we run the gauntlet of light suburban traffic volumes as we traverse the northern suburbs of Asquith, Mt Colah, Mt Kuringai and Berowra to emerge into more and more bushland areas with much fewer cars. The traffic situation on the return journey is a gradual return to the heavier vehicle volumes encountered at the beginning of the ride (though for much of the route in both directions we use the on road cycleway either side of the Pacific Highway wherever it exists). z
