Volunteer Award: Andrew Elliston – Rides

Andrew Elliston is ‘part of the furniture’ at Bike North. A member since 1999, Andrew took on the role of Ride Leader in 2015 to share his joy of riding with others.
More recently still, Andrew has been on the Rides sub-committee, helping to manage Bike North’s library of  routes and guiding and assessing new Ride Leaders.

It is for his achievements in the area of ‘Rides’, that Andrew has been recognized for Bike North’s Volunteer Award in 2024.

Since joining Bike North, Andrew has never looked back. He enthusiastically rode dozens of Bike North routes and whilst doing so, conceived in his mind a n
umber of new routes which would especially showcase his desired cycling environment – by water.

Andrew set about contributing to the Bike North Routes Library by devising over 26 new routes which he diligently mapped for our Ride with GPS library and created
associated description and pace recommendations. Oh, and he had to check out coffee stops along the way of course! These routes have now become Bike North classics
such as the ‘n’ Rivers to Como ride series (a fave of his – see photo), the Inner City Café ride series, Little Italy with Bays and Foreshores, and Big Cross City Loop.
Interesting fact: the first ride Andrew designed was back in the early 2000s, being Meadowbank to Bobbin Head, which he still enjoys leading today.

In late 2023, Andrew achieved two significant milestones – he celebrated leading 200 rides for Bike North using 100 different routes, of which 26 of those were designed by him!
We interviewed Andrew about these achievements in October last year, read our article here.

It is not just for these stats, however, that Andrew has been recognized, his personal qualities have been praised by those nominating him for the award:

“Andrew's enthusiasm and dedication have inspired many cyclists, including myself, to push beyond our comfort zones and develop our cycling skills.
His commitment to fostering a supportive and adventurous cycling community makes him exceptionally deserving of this award.”

“Andrew has been an inspirational leader within the Bike North community, dedicating his time and expertise to enhance the skills and experiences of riders at all levels.”

“Through his comprehensive training programs, Andrew has significantly improved the capabilities of both novice and experienced riders, preparing them for various regional events.
His unwavering commitment to riders' safety has always been his top priority, ensuring a secure and supportive environment for all participants.”

Andrew’s own passion for cycling has driven him to enhance the experience of other riders and we acknowledge, applaud and appreciate his contribution to Bike North.
